Watch our seminars from Almedalen
Vision Zero Cancer and Testbed Sweden Precision Health Cancer are organizing two events in Almedalen 2023. On Wednesday, June 28, Testbed Sweden Precision Health Cancer will be present with guests discussing the competence development necessary for successful implementation of precision health/precision medicine. On Thursday, June 29, Vision Zero Cancer, along with guests, will address the importance of establishing a national screening program for lung cancer.
Almedalen takes place each year in Sweden in the city of Visby at the island of Gotland and is the world's largest democratic meeting place for social issues. No question is too trivial and none too extensive. It is a place with a focus on meeting and conversation, where different voices and different perspectives can be heard. A meeting place - open to everyone who wants to be part of the democratic conversation. The unique thing about Almedalen is the wide range of actors in the public, private and non-profit sectors, who, together with political representatives and the media, meet for a week in Visby's narrow streets to discuss important social issues.
The seminars are in swedish!
Health and cancer care with precision - do we have the skills?
For the successful development and implementation of precision health/precision medicine, continuous competence development and the hiring of new professional categories in health care are required. How do we ensure the supply of skills nationally to modernize cancer care in a sustainable and equal way?
Precision health is driven by research and innovation. In order for development and implementation not to be delayed, it is important to quickly increase knowledge in the area. Precision medicine is a central component of precision health, which means sharper diagnostics, tailored treatment and follow-up based on the individual's unique needs and conditions. An important goal to strive towards is to be able to go from alleviating to curing and preventing disease. More precise interventions have great potential to improve human health. Both suffering and costs decrease as we can implement precision health. The seminar is organized by Testbed Sweden Precision Health Cancer, which was established in 2021 at the initiative of Genomic Medicine Sweden (GMS), SciLifeLab and Nollvision cancer. Authorities, regions, academia, business and civil society work together with design and method development for increased precision in prevention and diagnostics, more effective treatments, techniques and working methods.
National Screening Program for Lung Cancer – Time to Act
Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related deaths in Sweden and worldwide. Early detection is absolutely crucial for enabling curative treatment, yet two-thirds of lung cancer cases are diagnosed too late. Many EU countries are now planning for lung cancer screening, and some have implemented it.
There are many positive signs, but few governments have yet decided on national programs. In Sweden, there is substantial evidence regarding the value of early detection of lung cancer, and several studies have been published on the subject. Lung cancer screening serves as an example of the opportunities that come with expanded screening since the EU decided on a new recommendation in the area. Lung, prostate, and stomach cancer are the three new cancer types where screening is recommended, and the issue is highly relevant in Sweden, including a pilot project in Stockholm. In addition to the initiative in Stockholm-Gotland, there are plans to start lung cancer screening in several regions within a year. However, the Swedish Cancer Society warns of a slow implementation when a recommendation from the National Board of Health and Welfare comes. We cannot wait – it's time to act NOW! The seminar is organized by the innovation environment Vision Zero Cancer.
